This letter sans box is great. It keeps the sand in. It has an extra slot for the included card, which one can always supplement. And I love the yellow sand and tool to even it out. All in all, great to have in the classroom!

Very messy with my 4 year old. Sand goes everywhere. However my Son loves it bc he thinks the sand is fun. My question is where do you buy more sand from this company? Also not a fan of having to store it without anything to put sand in. Maybe they could design a cover for when NOT in use. Love the concept and engaged my son to want to try and write his Letters

I'm truly impressed with this game! It offers an incredible range of play options. You can engage in drawing, writing, and so much more, all using the sand provided. Playing with the sand itself is a wonderful sensory experience for both kids and adults. What's more, the quality of the sand and the overall product is top - notch. Highly recommended!

This is an old school Montessori style toy. It's just the kind of toy she would have used to encourage children with their literacy skills. It's appropriate for 5-7 year olds -- children who are beginning to write and spell. Younger children will likely make a mess with this; older kids will be bored quickly. The toy is very well made. The tray is sturdy, and the letter blocks are substantial. It's really not hard to use. You pour the sand in the tray and use the wooden stylus to write the letters you see on the blocks and cards. The sand is very fine and easy to trace through. The "eraser" makes it easy to clear the sand. You may have to make a couple of passes (think old magnadoodles), but don't go too fast and you won't make a mess. I have the kids use this on a tray or baking pan to keep the sand contained, though it's not nearly as messy as you might expect. The sand element (which I know freaks out some grown-ups) is what makes this interesting and versatile. Children can practice letters over and over without wasting paper. There is an ease in sand drawing, and it's a very forgiving medium so young writers are less likely to be discouraged in their letter practice. It's true, there is a misspelled card ("goad" instead of "goat"), but crab is spelled properly, so no worries there. Despite having many cards, I've discovered kids prefer making their own words with the cubes. Either way, kids will like this unique toy, and enjoy practicing writing or drawing or any other creative idea they want to make in the sand.I will warn it's not the kind of toy you just put on the shelf. It's probably a good idea to pour the sand back in the zipper bag for storing. It's actually not that difficult if you pour slowly. A funnel may help if you aren't patient.I'm usually very picky about toys that label themselves as "educational" (all toys are educational!). I'm also extremely picky about items that help with writing skills. That I like this says a lot. Don't use it for a 3 year old or a 12 year old. Keep it to Kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders, and your kids will be happy and successful.

This is a unique way to teach a child writing skills especially for those just learning. The kit is put together well and includes the basics, pictures, words, letters. The cards are a great help as they illustrate how to write letters using numbered arrows, both capital & lowercase letters. The other side of the card includes a cute picture along with the corresponding word. The blocks are like oversized dice, very sturdy and easy to read. The sand is like powder, super fine. I prefer a darker color as yellow makes it difficult to see the word. The board is very simplistic, made of light pine, but it is sturdy. The edges are smooth, no sliver worries. The wood does rub on one’s wrist which can get a bit annoying if using it too long. My grandkids are very receptive to this training method vs. pencil & paper. It adds a bit of fun and they get a kick out of covering up their mistakes. Great way to teach repetitive motion and the price is decent considering everything that’s included in the kit.

I thought this would be great for our toddler - to have fun and learn her letters. I do not recommend. First the sand is sooooo fine - and the letters do not appear as clearly as they could. When you use the swiper to 'clean' the sand - it runs right over it without clearing the letters (again sand to fine). If you do it too quickly - the sand easily tumbles over the top. The block letters - it took me so much time to make words with them. I couldn't file away what letters were on each of the 6 sides so I an put together a word for her to write. If you are using them just to pick a letter to write - fine, but it seems like a bit of a missed opportunity. Then the cards - I mean they have cute images, but the pack was bizarre. Some of them had a word that matched the letter (Like N for nuts). Others were random (I believe Crab had a P). But the worst for me was the image for G - GOAD (yes GOAD and not GOAT).....

When it comes to my 2-year-old and 6-year-old, I'm always looking for ways to make learning fun. Sand is so fun for them. My 2-year-old uses this for his letters. its easy for him to use, he can use the tool or his finger. The six-year-old uses this for spelling and word recognition. It also comes with cards and blocks to help them learn. The sand does get everwhere, and it's hard to store, especially when you have a 2-year-old who never wants to put it up. I would love a way to store the sand so that it doesn't get everywhere. But its a fun learning tool!!
