The Verdict:NEUTRALThe GOOD:- Well made- Ratchet release to allow free movement of cutting jaws- Large coated handles give good grip- Sharp cutting edgesThe BAD:- Didn't work well on soft battery cableChanges to get 5-stars:- Can’t think of anything at this timeDetails:This tool seems to be well made. It probably works awesome with larger wires or multi-wire cabling which have larger diameters. I had a need for it when I had to repair a battery cable going to the power distribution box (fuse box) under the hood of my truck. I thought they would be perfect for this job. I was wrong. The cable was relatively soft and flexible and was 2 or 4 gauge I believe. While the cutting jaws/blades are sharp to the touch, the joint holding them together isn't tight enough or a good design. The cable didn't cut well and I think the size overall and the small size of the strands didn't help. This is probably better suited for industrial applications or those cutting much large diameter wiring.************************************************My Rating Scale:5 STARS - Item worked better than advertised and exceeded my expectations. The item provided more value than I anticipated and is a great deal. The item seems very well made and should last for a long time. (HIGHLY recommend)4 STARS - Item worked exactly as expected if not slightly better. Item appears to be made well. I have no major complaints, it just didn't exceed my expectations (Good value, well made, met expectations, would recommend)3 STARS - Item worked as expected without any surprises, good or bad, and did what I expected it to do (met expectations; might recommend if a good value)2 STARS - Item easily wore out or didn't work as well as described, was disappointing for the price, and/or was of poor quality (might return if expensive; would not recommend).1 STAR - Item easily broke/failed, did not match description and was not useful or did not worked as described (do not buy; return if possible; would not recommend; junk/waste of money).

This had no problems going through service entrance cable. I'm not sure how long it will stay sharp, which is my only concern. However, it is heavy and I imagine you could sharpen it yourself if necessary. It does cut fairly slowly, but that is a byproduct of power in this case. Thanks.

Got this for my guy as he has a lot of wire to process for recycling as part of his work. Works well for copper and aluminum, which is what he's currently using it for, but he says it'll work great to cut practically anything. It's a hefty handsome tool made of strong steel and the red handles make it easy to find in his tool bucket.

This review is for YMYP Ratchet Cable Wire Cutter Heavy Duty for Electrical, Model #VX-325, $26 on amazon. This is a serious tool. It will accommodate up to 1-1/4” diameter cable or hose. The ratchet mechanism creates substantial mechanical advantage. Each squeeze of the handle (more than 3 inches of squeeze) advances the cutting blade only about 1/16” for about 50:1 mechanical advantage.Quick more open/more closed of the cutting blade is easy. On the label side of the tool there is a slider labeled “OPEN” with a down arrow. While pressing down on that slider the ratchet teeth can be moved to close or open the cutting blade. For safety the tool can be stored with handle mostly closed by rotating the silver pawl clockwise. Also recommend rotating the ratchet tooth portion so it is fully opened counter-clockwise.The PVC coated handles produce a comfortable grip. But they stress to NOT rely on their insulating properties to cut into a live electrical cable.

It's a beautifully made tool. The sweeping ratchet arm is, quite simply, art. And it's good for its intended purpose, cutting things that are softer than the blade. The tool itself is labeled for 2 inch , but for US consumption they gave a more conservative roughly 1 inch. The release lever only releases the rotating cutter to move forward, once it has been locked by the handle. It drops the tooth that prevent forward movement. There is no way to release the ratchet teeth that prevent reverse motion. That means that if you have a finger caught in there, you would need to cut the tool off of the finger, being careful not to ratchet the handle which would cut further. I think this should be a common safety warning, but I don't see it anywhere.Do not use this tool unless you are an adult and in a good frame of mind. Do not let children near it; it's too pretty. A curious mechanically minded child could trap a finger in there, and even you could not get the finger back out. Also this means that it's important not to try cutting materials harder than aluminum. If you get steel cable stuck in there and cannot complete the cut, you may have to discard the tool, or at least make several cuts through the steel with power tools to release it.My first application for this was to cut through a wooden branch I wanted to remove without using a power tool. It did it easily, but when using this with wood, I found that the wood can clog up the gears. I recommend blowing out the wood chips from the gears between cuts.A nice piece of machinery. Respect it and be careful with it.
